What is Semaglutide and How Does it Help With Weight Loss?

Semaglutide is a medication classified as a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It has been approved by the FDA for type 2 diabetes management under the brand name Ozempic/Rybelsus. It has recently been approved for weight loss under the brand name Wegovy as research showed significant benefits in weight loss with an average of 15-20% loss of total body weight.

Semaglutide helps with weight loss by decreasing appetite through decreased gastric emptying which helps to feel satiated or full for longer periods of time. This helps decrease cravings which in turn helps decrease caloric intake.
